Information about colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer involves the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in that part of the intestine. These cells can invade and destroy the tissue around them. If they penetrate the bloodstream or lymphatic, they can spread anywhere in the body and cause damage to other organs. This process of expansion is called metastasis.
Rectal cancer is a disease in which cancerous (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the rectum.
The rectum is part of the digestive system. The digestive system extracts and processes nutrients (such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water) from food and stores waste until it is expelled from the body.
The digestive system consists of the esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines. The last 6 feet of intestine are called the large intestine or colon, while the last 6 inches make up the rectum and anal canal. The anal canal ends in the anus (opening of the rectum to the outside of the body).
Colonic diverticulosis is one of the most common diseases of Western civilization and is due to the low-fiber diet. In the United States approximately 1/3 of the population develops diverticulosis at age 50 and 2/3 at age 80. Diverticulitis is described as a complication of infectious disease of the colon affecting in most cases exclusively the sigmoid and descending colon. While most cases of acute diverticulitis can be successfully managed with medical treatment, recurrent attacks and complications of diverticulitis are surgical treatment. The most important complications of diverticulitis are diffuse peritonitis, localized abscesses, fistulas (colovesical or colovaginal) and obstruction.
Colon polyps involve a group of lesions that project above the surface of the colon's mucosa. Studies conducted in autopsies show that colonic polyps are very common and occur in more than 30% of patients over 60 years of age. Not all polyps are malignant or all benign. Either way, 70-80% of resected polyps are adenomatous. The importance of adenomatous lesions is their relationship with colorectal cancer. Due to the prevalence of polyps in the general population and the increase in adenocarcinoma, these lesions represent a major public health problem because colorectal cancer is responsible for 10% of cancer deaths in the United States. Proper management of colonic polyps could reduce the risk of death from colorectal cancer.
