Glenohumeral dislocation, commonly called shoulder dislocation, is the most common dislocation of the skeleton as it represents 45% of all joint dislocations. The term to refers to separation between the head of the humerus and the scapula. The majority of cases (85%) of the humeral head goes out of its socket towards the front (anterior dislocation). These dislocations are usually caused by an impact to the arm that is transmitted to the human body causing bone displacement.
Treatment is initially conservative requiring urgent restoration of joint congruity through manipulation ("reduction of the dislocation") followed by a specific rehabilitation program to restore full mobility and stability to the joint.
